Irrigation....how much to apply.

These past 3 weeks have been great for finally drying down the course to having full control of water being put down. Club Champ weekend was perfect timing for us.

We are finding out the “holes” in the system that need more and/or less water.  Mike and I have been working on “tweaking” areas that are drying out and hand watering these spots everyday, sometimes twice a day. You might be wondering why hand-watering when we have a new irrigation system. Hand-watering allows us to only water the areas that need it. When you use the irrigation sprinklers, 9 times out of 10, you over-water an area that doesn’t need it just to just to get the dry spot, which also means wasting water.  This time of year we air on the side of keeping things a little bit drier as we don’t want to over water for the reason it takes a lot longer for things to dry out and when it stays wet for an extended period you risk the chance of getting strong disease pressure.

With that being said, I’d say there are areas that we have maybe allowed to get too dry for our standards. A good learning experience for sure! But these areas for sure will bounce back after some moisture which we have been addressing and the forecast looks to be a bit wet.

When we run water each night(and its been a lot as of late), each area gets different amounts based on its micro-climate, grass type and height of cut. This practice allows the playability to remain as consistent as possible from green to green, tee to tee, fairway to fairway, rough to rough.  Something that is a big learning curve coming to a new property, especially when it hasn’t stopped raining up since May long of 2016 up until 3 weeks ago.
